1 Dec 1969
The Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) began its suicide prevention hotline in an office at the YWCA Centre, 254 Outram Road, with the number 96544.
1973
The single telephone line was increased to two lines and the number was changed to 91444.
15 Feb 1976 SOS moved to its own premises at 591A New Bridge Road.
4 Apr 1976 The hotline telephone number was changed to 221 4444.
12 Aug 1989
SOS moved to Block 18 Outram Park #03-21, which offered more room for operations and training.
1991
With the introduction of toll-free lines, the emergency telephone number was changed to 1800-221 4444.
9 Jun 2001
SOS relocated to Block 10 Cantonment Close. The office was officially opened on 12 January 2002 by Mr Mah Bow Tan, Minister for National Development and Patron of SOS. The occasion was graced by His Excellency SR Nathan, the President of the Republic of Singapore.
July 2003
SOS started the Email Befriending service - pat@samaritans.org.sg, and the suicide bereavement support group - Healing Bridge.
1 Mar 2005 The LOSS programme, Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors, was launched.
2008 SOS received the Non-Profit Organisation Award for Volunteer Management during the National Volunteerism & Philanthropy (NVPC) Awards 2008.
2010
The website was revamped to make it more user-friendly and information on all publicity materials were updated to enhance SOS’ corporate image and communication with the general public.
8 Nov 2011
In keeping with its efforts in suicide prevention, SOS has produced and launched a 2-minute "call-to-action" online video clip on YouTube. This video utilises the popular social media platform to spread awareness of its 24-hour suicide prevention hotline.
17 Jan 2012
SOS produced and launched a 2 minutes video on Youtube which featured short interviews of some Samaritans.
